Happy New Year!

Date: 15th Feb 2018 @ 1:16pm

We kick started the new year with a Victorian classroom experience to begin our new theme all about how life at Canon Burrows has changed. The children experienced sitting in rows and practising writing their spellings with chalk, just as they would have done over one hundred years ago. They then had a go at some Victorian handwriting which was very tricky but everyone tried their best!

We then began SAW Week with an exciting hunt for some lost body parts! Poor Mr. Skeleton had been scattered all around the playground and needed Year 1's help to put him back together. During SAW Week we are learning all about the human body and senses, so we had a go at naming the parts of the body as we found them on the playground! Then we had fun labelling each other's bodies with post-it notes before making our own skeletons with cotton buds.

The theme for SAW Week this year is 'Read All About It! Science in the News' and the science news story that Year 1 have been looking at is about something called 'Ghost Hearts'. Scientists have found a way of turning pig hearts into healthy human hearts that can then be used for transplants. We thought about how this is in fact recycling, and were inspired to create something by recycling materials ourselves. We turned a used plastic bottle into a lovely vase! You will have to wait until the end of the week to see our creations!

We also took part in a carousel of activities all aimed at getting us to use our senses to identify different objects. We had a blindfold taste test, a smell test, a touch test where we felt objects inside socks, a sight quiz where we tried to identify objects by extremely close-up photographs of them and a listening game where we had to identify different sounds. It was a lot of fun and everyone was very brave tasting the different foods!

It has been a really fun start to the term and we are very excited about our trip to Portland Basin next week. Don't forget to come dressed as Victorian boys and girls next Wednesday!
