Spelling

At Canon Burrows our children begin their spelling journey in Reception and Year 1, where they learn a basic phonic code through our Little Wandle Phonics scheme. From Year 2 - Year 6  spelling is taught through Scode; a systematic, phonics based spelling scheme.

Scode covers all aspects of the National Curriculm by teaching an advanced phonic code, whilst focusing on etymology which engages our children in the origins of language.

Throughout the scheme our children are immersed in the history of words and why words are spelt the way they are, providing them with the knowledge on which to build their spelling skill.  The fascinating, the gross, and hilarious combine to introduce our children to a challenging and varied vocabulary.
