Community Friendship Project

The world we live in is an amazing, awe-inspiring but sometimes scary place to be and at Canon Burrows we think it is important that we discuss issues relating to this. Each week, through our Picture News Collective worship, we discuss a current news story by looking at an image and considering a thought provoking question.

Inspired by a particular edition of Picture News, our School Council developed the idea of creating a ‘Friendship Project’: every class across school has become a ‘friend’ of a local organization, for example a care home, a hospital or a charity.  We began this during Advent with our Angel in your Window Project.  All of the children made angels both at home and in school which they placed in their own windows, posted them through the letterboxes of local homes and businesses with an accompanying letter to explain the project so they could be displayed in their windows too and sent them to their ‘friends’ as part of the Friendship Project.  Over the year, each class has come up with different ways of keeping in contact with their ‘friends’; for example, virtual carol services, sending poetry and art and examples of work. Being able to spread love, hope and joy is always important to us and we were glad to be able to do this in such thoughtful and creative ways. As a result of this, we have received the Picture News Impact Award for our work with the local community.
